Saturday Insights: $1.3m OBS March Grad Leads Stacked List Of First-Timers

The second-costliest hip out of OBS March this year, FEROCIOUS (Flatter) worked in :9.4 and sold on a final bid of $1,300,000 to Marquee Bloodstock with the partnership of JR Ranch, Restrepo, Ramiro, High Step Racing and OGMA Investments now listed as owners. A son of the late Claiborne stallion Flatter, Ferocious is the second foal out of a winning Midnight Lute mare who is a half to GISW Obligatory (Curlin). This is also the family of French G1 winner Etoile Montante (Miswaki) and MGSW/MGISP Bonny South (Munnings). He'll break from the rail with Javier Castellano aboard for Gustavo Delgado.

Praetor (Into Mischief), a $725,000 KEESEP grad, is the second foal out of MGSW Curlin's Approval. Chad Brown trains for the partnership of William Lawrence, CHP Racing and Gainesway Stable.

Lined up towards the outside is Ripped (City of Light), a $650,000 yearling purchase out of FTSAUG for BC Stables LLC. D Wayne Lukas puts Joel Rosario aboard the son of Fly Time, herself a half to GI Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer (Twirling Candy). TJCIS PPS

Kicking things off at the Spa is the one-two punch of Assertiveness (Into Mischief), a $650,000 KEESEP buy for Repole Stables and Spendthrift Farm for Todd Pletcher out of MGSW Isabella Sings (Eskendereya), another Pletcher runner. She has already produced Mucho Macho Man Stakes winner Otello (Curlin).

Lined up just to that runner's outside, Asbury Park (GB) (Frankel {GB}) goes to post for Peter Brant and St Elias Stable for Chad Brown and is a half to MGSW/MG1SP Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}), SW/GSP Dude N Colorado (GB) (Uncle Mo) and SW/GSP Mokarris (More Than Ready). Dam Limonar (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}) is a half to GI Shoemaker Mile Stakes winner Talco (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}). TJCIS PPS

Code of Justice (Into Mischief) sold for $850,000 to BC Stables at FTSAUG last year and is another starter for the D Wayne Lukas/Joel Rosario team.

Opposing him is St Elias Stable homebred Classicist (Curlin), the half to GSW Jouster (Noble Mission {GB}) out of a daughter of Champion 2-year-old filly Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat).

Godolphin homebred Sea Vista (Street Sense) is a half to MGSP Nash (Medaglia d'Oro) and a full to GSP Sara Street and to the dam of GSW Kalik (Collected). His dam's half-sister produced MGSW/GISP Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah). TJCIS PPS

The first of two maiden races of note at Ellis, Sweet Seraphine (Quality Road) brought $900,000 as a yearling at Keeneland last September for Stonehaven Steadings. She is a half to GSW Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) and GSP Olive Branch (Speightstown) is out of a half to GSW Wilburn (Bernardini), GSW Beethoven (Sky Mesa) and SW/GSP La Appassionata (Bernardini), the dam of GSP Fort Warren (Curlin).

To her outside, Nosleeptilbrooklyn (Ghostzapper) was a $500,000 purchase out of the same KEESEP sale for Boardshorts Stables. She is a half to MGISW Adare Manor (Uncle Mo). TJCIS PPS

6th-ELP, 71K, Msw, 2yo, f, 6f, 3:26 p.m.

Princess Lolly (Candy Ride {Arg}) brought $510,000 at OBS March and is another Boardshorts Stables buy. Her half-siblings include MGSW Kid Cruz (Lemon Drop Kid), MGSW/GISP and $1.7m KEENOV broodmare Three Witches (Into Mischief) and GSW Spellbound (Bernardini) who produced MGSW Soothsay (Distorted Humor). Second dam Voodoo Lily is also responsible for GISP Magical Illusion (Pulpit), the dam of Broodmare of the Year Stage Magic (Ghostzapper).

First-crop sire McKinzie is represented by Northern Voyage, a $475,000 KEESEP grad who sold from Whisper Hill Farm to C R K Stable. Second dam Bethany produced MGISW and sire Tizway (Tiznow).

Purple and Gold (Echo Town) brought $310,000 as a 2-year-old at EASMAY and is a half to GSP Glacial (Frosted) and to the dam of MSW/GSP Opus Forty Two (Mendelssohn). She is out of a half to GISW and sire Cupid (Tapit) and a full to MGSW Heart Ashley. TJCIS PPS
